Artist: William Baptiste Baird (American, 1847-1899)
Signed: W.B. Baird, lower right. Gallery tag affixed verso indicates that beneath the signature (hidden by frame) is also "Paris, 1881", but I have not removed from frame and am unable to confirm.
Subject: Landscape with five cows.
Date: Probably 1881.
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Dimensions (height x width):
20 1/2" x 31" (image sight)
30" x 40" (frame)
Provenance: This item is on consignment to Canvas & Kiln from the current owner whose parents purchased it in 1981 at Kerwin Galleries, Burlington, CA. Affixed printed gallery card affixed verso reads "William Baptiste Baird (b. 1847), landscape with sheep signed l/r WB Baird, Paris and dated 1881. Oil on canvas. 21 1/2" x 32 1/4". Taped to back is paper from Liros Gallery, Alexandria, VA, and label from Kerwin Galleries. Buyer will receive purchase receipt dated 1981.
Condition: Artwork is not securely mounted in frame - it pops out. If you would like the painting mailed without the frame, we will be happy to ship it that way instead. Otherwise, we will have it professionally packaged to avoid any movement in shipping.
Under UV light you can see evidence of an approx. 1" repair at lower right, and canvas back also shows this (see photo). There is a small scratch to surface at lower right near signature. Painting has been hanging in the same home for nearly 40 years.
About the artist: William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, but moved to Paris where he exhibited at the Paris Salon during the last quarter of the 19th century. He is known for his rural paintings, many featuring animals.
